Tried & Tested: Benefit They’re Real Mascara

Long overdue post/review on this so I’ll just keep this informative, short and sweet.

*Rating: 7/10

Pros:

  • Very very natural looking
  • Thickens the lashes
  • Lengthens a tad bit to its max potential

Cons:

  • Always smudges on the lower lash line
  • Not black enough
  • Not thick enough
  • Non-waterproof
  • Not cheap for an average mascara (S$15 for the sample size/S$32 for the full size)

Here’s a more detailed review:

This mascara is great if you want to achieve a natural look, without having on overly done lashes. It does not look fake even with 2 or 3 coats on. I normally use 2 or 3 coats of it on my upper lashes and just one coat on the lower lashes because it smudges on the lower lash line (yes, how annoying). They’re not jet black enough, thickening or lengthening enough to pull off a night out look or glam look for an event. To be frank, I call this my ‘school mascara’ because they are so natural-looking for school that I use them everyday. I tend to use a fancier mascara for dates or a day out. This mascara is NOT waterproof, i repeat NOT waterproof. Now that is a disappointing attribute.

I Hate Body Hair.

Finally shaved my legs after a month of letting my leg hairs hide my smooth, satin skin hahahaha sorry for the self-praise. I mean I stopped shaving so often because well I’m always wearing pants to school and I don’t really have the time/chance to look at my legs long and hard. Unlike the past, I used to wear shorts in secondary school and JC. My soccer days were the days that I shaved every single day because I’m always in sports attire and I hate having to spot a single hair or whatever on my leg/arm while stretching during training or sitting down watching a soccer match.

Yes, I’m vain and I shave every part of my body except for my eyebrows and my upper lip since I was sec 2. Call me whatever you want but I just hate my body hair so much I can’t stand it to the point that I used to bring a tweezer to school to pluck any stray hairs that bothered my eyes.

No, I don’t pluck my eyebrows either. And yes, I shave down there too. Yep, there. Hello, it’s considered as maintaining hygiene and it’s encouraged in Islam to shave your lady parts.

Also for the record, it hurts like balls to pluck your upper lip. You’re better off waxing/threading it. Actually, waxing is hardly painful and threading is a big bitch to your upper lip. I’ve done upper lip threading for at least 7 times already since I tried it early this year (I used to DIY wax it) at either ‘Browhaus’ or that super cheap indian shop at Yew Tee and every single time I get waxed there, I tear up considering that I have a pretty high tolerance for pain.

Underarm waxing is THERAPEUTIC, I swear. I love the part where the lady spreads the warm sugar wax over your arm and then yanks it off. Oooh that sensation is really relaxing. You guys should try it as opposed to shaving because well, shaving just aggravates your delicate underarm skin and causes ingrown hairs (which are really a pain in the ass).

Smashbox Photo Finish Colour Correcting Primer GREEN

Hello guys and girls, i’ve been gone for far too long and it’s already 2015! I’m back for more updates and reviews because over my (another) mini hiatus, i’ve purchased/received a hell lot of beauty and makeup products as well as tried and tested services.

So let’s begin!

SB_C014_430

I so gratefully received this as a birthday gift for my 20th birthday this year and i was really excited! This primer has been on my list of “Primers To Get” for a while now and well, of course i’ve been delaying the purchase as it is pretty pricey. A 30ml tube retails for either SGD 64 or SGD 67 in Sephora (Singapore) and USD 39 in Sephora (USA).

The packaging was pretty and nothing crazy fabulous but the tube was really pretty and sleek. I love how it is a tube and not a pump because this means that I can bring it along for travelling without worrying that it’ll take up a small but still significant amount of baggage weight.

The texture is light and is pretty similar to regular lightweight moisturizer except that it’s green-coloured. It definitely feels weightless on my skin, velvety to the touch and looks dewy when absorbed and dried. It does fill up large pores to a large extent but not entirely. Besides, no product is a miracle.

Sad to say i have not used this without using a makeup setting spray after putting on my full face makeup. I’m currently using NYX’s Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray and i will review on that one soon-ish! However, I must say that my makeup looks so much smoother, closer to real skin and slightly dewy with this primer underneath as compared to using Maybelline’s Baby Skin Primer (the blue tube).

Here’s a little breakdown of my normal makeup routine (which takes me 30-60 mins to complete):

  1. Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer with SPF
  2. Maybelline’s Baby Skin Primer but NOW, Smashbox Photo Finish Colour Correcting Primer in Green
  3. Tarte 12hr Amazonian Clay Foundation in Fair Sand (applied with a really good, really soft, dense and really cheap flat top kabuki brush which i would do a review on as well)
  4. MAC Select Cover-Up Concealer in NC20 (applied with a TINY version of the foundation brush i used + some finger work)
  5. Skinfood Buckwheat Loose Powder (ELF flat top powder brush)
  6. A few sprays of NYX Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray
  7. Eyebrows – Sleek Au Naturale Palette with a slanted eyebrow brush
  8. Eyes – Sleek Au Naturale Palette or Sephora 130 Colour Festival Set
  9. Contour – Sleek Au Naturale Palette or Sephora 130 Colour Festival Set (applied with a dome-shaped kabuk/i brush)
  10. Cheeks & Highlight – Lancome Blush Subtil Palette or Sephora 130 Colour Festival Set (applied with a slanted kabuki brush)
  11. A few spritz of NYX Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray on nose and cheeks and eyes
  12. Curl Lashes + The Face Shop Mascara (i forgot the name)
  13. Madre Labs Lip Balm in vanilla/olive oil/pomegranate/tea tree and use a cotton bud to remove any foundation on lips
  14. Stila Colour Balm Lipstick in Amelia / Clinique’s Chubby Stick in 14 Curvy Candy / MAC Lustering Lipstick / L’oreal Paris Colour Riche (i forgot what shade color)

PROS

  • lightweight formula and weightless on the skin
  • dries to a slightly dewy/semi-matte finish
  • has colour-correcting properties (cancels out my redness quite a lot) and doesn’t leave the face ashy looking
  • velvety smooth base for foundation
  • makes overall makeup look a lot smoother and softer
  • basically, it is a f awesome primer –> fantabulous!

CONS

  • Pricey
  • Only 30ml
  • Wish it cancels out more redness (but nothing is perfect and there was no guarantee to begin with LOL)
  • I would totally try other primers if they are reputable and less pricey

RATING: 8.5/10

WHY?

  1. Pricey (minus 1 point)
  2. Doesn’t completely or 95% reduce redness. It reduces the redness on my face by 75% max. (minus 0.5 points)

Hope you enjoyed my review of the Smashbox Photo Finish Colour Correcting Primer in Green. Do let me know any of your favourite primers that I should try out! But i might even stick to Smashbox because the texture and finish is lovely 🙂

Will update more soon! Toodles!
